Freedom
Yesterday we celebrated the 4th of July – Independence day; the day that the United States gained it’s freedom. I had to stop and reflect. I had to ask myself, as African Americans are we really free? In light of the modern day lynching aka unanswered police shootings of unarmed people of color, are we really free?
When there’s thousands upon thousands of people of color living at or below the poverty line with systematic hidden racism preventing them access to good jobs, good education, good health care and housing, I have to ask are we really free?
Americans elected Donald Trump who wasn’t even close to getting the popular vote and we all know what type a man he is. I have to ask again are we really free?
As people of color, we are continually and consistently disrespected. This country was built on our backs, our strengths and ingenuity. It is time that we free our minds and truly believe that we are free. It is time that we band together to demand our freedom. It is time that we work together collectively to show that we are people of strength, capability and determination. We don’t need the majority race to tell us we are free – we are. We have the knowhow and the skills to build whatever life me want, communities we want, industries we want. All we have to do is stick together and believe! Once that happens we will truly be free!
