6 Steps to fighting procrastination & Write that Novel!

Poetry In Motion’s

Written Word Wednesday

We live for wicked wordplay and We'll help you design your word playground…

We all do it. We set the goal at the beginning of the year and loudly and proudly declare; I’m going to write that novel this year! Then dun dun dun… the procrastination sets in, and you have that horrified look stuck on your face asking yourself where did the time go?

Well, I’m here to help you get out of your funk! So pull yourself off the couch. Take off those old yoga pants or sweats and suit up for battle. Well, at least put on something comfy and prepare to write! Follow these simple steps and kiss your procrastination goodbye.

Number one, check your attitude. Are you talking negatively to yourself? Hey you, yes you: You know you can’t write! If that little lizard is in your head talking to you like that, shut it down immediately and bathe yourself in positive self-talk.

Two shut the door. No literally, shut the door on all of those pesky interruptions that may pop up or pop into the room while you’re trying to write. By eliminating distractions ahead of time, you will be able to concentrate.

Three, remove your distractions. Turn off that TV. Turn off your phone. It’s ok to turn off the phone. No, you will not die if you missed that IG post of that fluffy cat in a top hat or what aunt Lucy posts on Facebook.

Four set the mood. Yes, get your candles going. Place your laptop open in the middle of your desk – make sure your desk is decluttered. Get your favorite drink ready, y’all know me, I have to have my glass of wine. Make sure all the things that you need to write with are nearby.

Five set a timer. You can designate 30 minutes, an hour, or two hours to devote to writing. This makes it easier to start knowing that you have an ending in mind.

Finally, sit your butt in your chair, open your laptop, and write. You don’t have to edit. You don’t have to make it perfect. All you have to do is let your fingers fly over the keyboard and write!

This should assist you in breaking up your procrastination mode. If you need further assistance, contact me. My staff and I are ready and willing to help and coach you through your writing issues!

Until next time – Enjoy the journey!
